Hey what’s the Buzz??? with Mitchell Kossak Ph.D, Karen Estrella Ph.D, Ara Parker Ph.D, Angelica Pinna-Perez
As a core faculty teaching group at Lesley University in Expressive Arts Therapy, we took time this year to explore with each other, current students, and alumni where we are as a field. To do this, we looked at our history as well as our guiding principles and practices. We became curious about emerging and emergent trends and theories in the field and how our graduate students and professionals in the field may address the changing needs of the populations we serve. These discussions culminated in a symposium titled: Emerging Theories and the Identity of the Expressive arts Therapist.
Some of the themes we began to address at this symposium included: how we as a profession might develop and position our professional roles and certifications/ licensing; an articulated need for community building and exchanges amongst professional peers; ways of working in the cyber universe as well as ways to work with digital media; ethical and pedagogical considerations and approaches to emergent issues in mental health and community health; the role of identity, culture and social action; exploring more deeply and articulating the unique aspects of our specialization and the potential for trans-disciplinarity.
For this presentation, we will share our thoughts, ideas, and practices that have come from this year long inquiry in order to cultivate the already fertile ground that has been laid and open the discussion to the wider IEATA community..
